An outdoor maternity session? In winter? Let's do it!
I'm seriously game for just about anything when it comes to photography, and I braved the cold with this gorgeous couple for a mid February maternity photo shoot. This session is a couple years old at this point, as we took these photos in 2020, but I still love how this session turned out, and wanted a chance to share the images with all of you!
I'll be honest when I say I wasn't entirely sure I would like the look of this session much, since all the trees and bushes were dormant for the winter. I'm not a huge fan of winter, unless there is some pretty snow, and I really prefer the trees dressed with lush green leaves. I normally love lots of neutral tones in my images, but I worried that it might be a bit too much brown. When we walked to where I wanted to start our session, I was presently surprised by the beautiful green and blues that this little river was giving us at Charles David Hartman Memorial Park, in Lee's Summit, Missouri. It was a nice pop of color for Ashley and Mason's session.
If you're local to the area, I definitely recommend checking out Charles David Hartman Park! In addition to it being a lovely spot for photos, there are some walking trails and views of this pretty river. In the summer this little spot of water that pools along the river, often has some kids playing and swimming. My family and I have gone a few times, and we always enjoy it.
Ashely totally rocked this black mermaid silhouette maternity gown from my client closet. Although black can sometimes make it hard to see the baby bump, I love how this dress shows off the curves of expecting moms. Mason did a great job styling his outfit for their session as well. I loved his olive green pull-over, and the brown boots; both were perfect for this nature rich outdoor location.
It may have been pretty chilly, but I had a great time working with Ashley and Mason. It's hard to believe that this session took place just before the world turned upside-down because of Covid. I was heart broken to have to cancel their newborn session. There was so much uncertainty, in addition to non-essential business shut downs that were happening. I know this pandemic has affected us all in so many ways, and many opportunities were missed. Images are so incredibly powerful and mark important and special milestones, and life changes (or in this case WORLD changes). This session will forever be a marker in my memory, as my last pre-covid session 💔.
